Real issues/Real experience
Experiential Learning in Nairobi offers students and adults a transformative, on-the-ground perspective into the complexities of urban international development in informal settlements. Through immersive engagement with local communities, participants gain firsthand insight into the economic, social, and political dynamics shaping life in Nairobi’s slums—knowledge that cannot be fully captured in a classroom. Dr. Pashayan's programs foster critical thinking, cultural humility, and applied research skills that equip learners to better understand global inequality, community-led development, and sustainable solutions. With extensive expertise in Experiential Learning since 2010, Dr. Pashayan offers customized experiences that connect theory to lived reality.
These immersive programs—ranging from one-day to eight-weeks—are tailored to individual interests including health, gender, economics, entrepreneurship, housing, WASH, micro-farming, education, climate change, and community art. Backed by years of primary research in low-resource urban settings, Dr. Pashayan has shared insights globally, including as a ECOSOC Member at the UN speaking as an advocate of residents of informal settlements, conversations with two World Bank Presidents (2018–2024) and the World Bank Country Director in Kenya, and briefings with the IMF Head of Gender. Participants gain a deeply contextualized understanding of development challenges and innovations from the ground up, and have the opportunity to help shape the future of urban Africa.
Certificates in Experiential Learning to students can be
co-endorsed in some cases by YOD and your institution.

Testimonials
"Thank you Dr. Pashayan and the YOD-Int'l team for an unforgettable experience in Mukuru! We listened to the residents as they shared their stories, struggles, and strengths. Long-term impact is not designed by foreign organizations, it's created by people who support their own community."

"I've been thinking a lot about our chat, especially about the policy stuff we talked about for our program. Your insights were spot-on, and I'm eager to dig into that document about policy recommendations you mentioned. Mrs. Audrey mentioned that you're the go-to person for this kind of advice, and I can see why! Your experience and knowledge could really help us take our program to the next level."

re: Research Advisement for African United Nations Youth Delegates
"I’m writing to thank you for taking on SIS Honors student Sascha Shroff as a mentee this year. You have really gone above and beyond helping Sascha to refine her research question and even finding people in Nairobi to help her conduct her survey! I’m excited that Sascha will be producing original data for her Honors thesis, and I am hopeful that the data tell an interesting and informative story."

"Prof. Pashayan - Thank you so much for a fantastic call a week ago; your book and what you shared during our call have opened my mind so much further to the nature of extreme poverty and what might be done about it. I certainly feel more confident on the direction of the paper now and what it may be able to accomplish."

"I want to just thank you for the life changing opportunity to visit the informal settlements in Nairobi last summer. That program was the absolute highlight of my graduate degree and something I will take with me for a long time in my professional and personal life. I learned more about development in those 10 days than I have in any other class on campus."
